A publication of all of the known published hymns of Charles Albert Tindley (1851-1933), a self-educated descendant of slaves who became known as one of the most important founders of Black Gospel music. As one who superbly articulated the plight of the downtrodden, Tinndley was a man both of his time and before his time. In this eloquent poet-pastor-musician one experiences a lyrical theology that holds in tension the anxieties of oppression with the vision of a better world, both here and now and beyond. His metaphors, similes, imagery, biblical allusions, and folk expressions are those with which African Americans may readily identify; and yet, his hymns have reached far beyond one group of people to the larger Christian community ~"Charles Albert Tindley not only was a good composer; he was unique. he knew his Bible and could translate its archaic language into the soft, picturesque, and sonorous language of his people, and ultimately of all people, He was an extraordinary storyteller; he told his stories in simple and direct melodies, using harmonies that did not overpower the simplicity of his messages." Horace Clarence Boyer, Professor Emeritus of Music, University of Massachusetts ~"This collection is a much-deserved and long-awaited supplement to many denominational hymnals, both Catholic and Protestant... Tindley's songs have been absorbed and sung, and continue to be absorbed and sung, by African American and non-African Americans both Catholic and Protestant. Like Martin Luther, he was a theologian, preacher, and composer whose message was as clear in his songs and poetry as they were in his sermons. These songs continue to inspire, uplift, encourage, provide hope, joy, peace, and comfort for all Christians in the twenty-first century and I am certain for generations yet unborn!"
